
Sjoerd de Roos (1877-1962) is considered to be Holland’s first professional type designer. His typeface Nobel was created in 1929 for the Amsterdam Type Foundry as a response to Futura and Berthold Grotesk. It was successful throughout the country and was used in many Dutch mechanical typesetting companies until the 1960s.

Tobias Frere-Jones described the typeface as “Futura cooked in dirty pots and pans”
Tobias Frere-Jones created Font Bureau’s Nobel interpretation, and Cyrus Highsmith and Dyana Weissmann added its Extra Light fonts.
