The development of DTL Prokyon began as a private project in the summer of 1997. Erhard Kaiser worked on the typeface continuously for five years, alongside his job as a lecturer in Kiel. Superficially, the font family is reminiscent of a combination of TheSans, Dax, Univers and Gill Sans. Its distinguishing feature is a reduction of form, expressed, for instance, in the omission of spurs.

Prokyon is elaborately conceived and masterfully developed. Kaiser’s unusual text typeface builds a bridge between classical and contemporary type. It takes its name from the German spelling of Procyon, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Minor.
