Volker Küster was born in Wernigerode in 1941, and studied art design at Oberschöneweide Technical College in East Berlin, followed by calligraphy and typography under Albert Kapr in Leipzig. Küster left the GDR in 1984 and moved to Hamburg, where he became director of the Scangraphic type studio.

It was here, between 1985 and 1988, that he created his striking typeface Today Sans, a lively sans-serif font based on the structures and proportions of Renaissance Roman type. “Today” is still available in both headline font (Supertype) and text font (Bodytype) versions. Supertype is tighter for headlines, while Bodytype is proportioned and cut for small type.
